Donald Trump blasts ‘disaster’ Mitch McConnell moments before hospital release

Donald Trump has blasted Mitch McConnell just moments before the Republican Party’s Senate Minority Leader was released from hospital. The 81-year-old Kentucky Senator was admitted to George Washington University Hospital on Wednesday last week after a fall at a reception in Washington DC left him concussed.

But Trump had no qualms about mocking him while he was still resting up in hospital.

Addressing supporters in Iowa, Mr Trump said: “We do have to do something about Mitch McConnell.”

Trump, who is out on the campaign trail ahead of the looming Republican presidential primary race, added: “He’s a disaster.

“He gets his 10 guys, and they give [President Joe] Biden whatever they want.

“There’s something going on. That doesn’t make sense. They get whatever they want.”

He continued: “We got to get him the hell out.

“He’s a problem, big problem. In the meantime, I hope he’s feeling well, but he’s a big problem.”

In a recent update, McConnell’s spokesman David Popp revealed the Senator’s “concussion recovery is proceeding well”.

He added that McConnell is being treated for a “minor rib fracture” and will only return to Congress after a move to a physical rehab centre.

Trump and McConnell have had a difficult relationship since the property-tycoon-turned-politician announced his 2016 White House bid.

At the time, McConnell claimed Trump “doesn’t know about the issues” as he slated the future president.

But he later endorsed Trump after it became clear the 76-year-old was going to win the GOP nomination.

McConnell stood by Trump as the ex-POTUS battled to get legislation through Congress and fend off his first impeachment trial.

He even rejected the call for witnesses to testify, warning the Senate’s role is to act as “judge and jury” rather than aid the impeachment process.

The pair’s relationship deteriorated drastically after Trump’s defeat in 2020 and the January 6 Capitol riot.

The former POTUS described his long-time ally as a “third-rate leader” and an “unsmiling political hack”.

In response, McConnell accused Trump of bearing “moral responsibility” for the riot and of shouting “unhinged falsehoods” from the “world’s largest megaphone”.

However, McConnell refused to join the seven GOP dissenters who voted to convict Trump as the trial fell just 10 votes short of the two-third majority required by the Constitution.
