Dog walker horrified after finding 10-inch ball of 'worm-like' creatures writhing on beach

A dog walker has been left spooked after finding a strange pile of rubbery, “worm-like” creatures on a beach in Anglesey, Wales. Katie Tootell made the bizarre discovery while out walking her dogs.

Ms Tootell, a regular at the beach for the past 12 years, said she knows the beach at Traeth Lligwy so well that she knows what to expect there.

However, the discovery of this mystery object on April 3 left her stunned.

At first, she said she was sure her dogs were just sniffing a washed-up jellyfish. However, closer inspection revealed something far different.

What her dogs had found was a pile of rubbery translucent worm-like creatures, each around two inches long.

The entire creature came to a length of around 25cm while closer inspection revealed that it was covered in hundreds of small dots, thought to be eggs.

Speaking to NorthWalesLive, Ms Tootell said: “I came upon it while walking my dogs on Traeth Lligwy on Monday morning

“The dogs spotted it first and when they started to sniff it I thought they’d just come across a jellyfish, but when I saw it up close, I didn’t have a clue what it was.”

Ms Tootell added: “I’ve been coming to the beach for 12 years and I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

The small white dots inside the capsules are thought to be squid eggs. Squid eggs are normally anchored to the seafloor.

In this case, they must have become loose and washed up on the beach.

Although this is an unusual sight in North Wales, it can happen occasionally, normally with tragic consequences for the young squids.
