Desperate anti-Brexit activists have tried to inflate the number of protesters at a failed rally in London today.
Remoaners, who demanded the UK rejoin the EU, struggled to muster a crowd today as they marched through the capital.
Supporters gathered outside the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane before heading to Parliament Square.
One Remainer shared a dramatic social media criticising the BBC for not covering their march, warning “You will not silence us”.
The Tweet at 2:16 pm today was initially accompanied by a photograph purporting to advertise the march, showing a dense crowd of tens of thousands of pro-EU activists.
But in the background of the photograph was a Big Ben fully covered in scaffolding, meaning it was taken before 2021 when workers first started removing the building equipment. The scaffolding was fully removed in May 2022.
One user commented: “This is an old photo. There is no scaffolding around Big Ben. 2k at the current protest. Remoaner desperation.”
Just ten minutes later, according to X’s (formerly Twitter) edit history, the tweet was changed to show a picture that cropped out Big Ben.
Then five minutes later, another picture was posted with a much less dense crowd.
The post read: “I don’t want to believe that @BBCNews is deliberately ignoring the enormous #RejoinEU march for any political reasons, but it’s becoming hard to ignore their lack of coverage…
“You can’t keep pretending #BrexitLies. You can’t pretend we’re not here. You will not silence us.
Specialist cranes were used back on the 24th of March, 2022 to finally remove the complex scaffolding around Big Ben. By May, the structure was finally completely free from scaffolding.
Today’s National Rejoin March appeared to have far fewer participants than past marches, with as little as 5,000 marching.
Previous protests have gathered tens of thousands of participants, joined in their anger at Britain leaving the EU seven years ago.
