DeSantis backers up in arms as they threaten to oust Trump over Florida swipe

Ron DeSantis supporters have come together to finance Donald Trump’s relocation from Florida after he slighted the US state.

The Trump campaign took aim at the former president’s home state in a recent rant slamming the sitting Governor’s record in power, branding it one of “misery and despair.”

In a statement, Trump’s aides said Florida had become the “worst state” to live, blaming DeSantis for a host of issues such as the high cost of living and skyrocketing home prices.

But the Never Back Down PAC, which was formed to boost DeSantis’s potential presidential bid, said they would be happy to fund Trump’s move away from the state.

CEO Chris Jankowski said: “Donald Trump has so deeply disparaged the state of Florida by calling it the ‘worst state,’ we … will help him leave by offering financial assistance to help him move to his beloved California.”

In his inflammatory statement, Trump praised Sunshine State Governor Gavin Newsom for being “very nice to me” during his presidency.

Jankowski continued his tongue-in-cheek remarks saying moving to California would allow Trump “to be close to his good buddy Gavin Newsom, whom he loves so intensely and gets along with so well.”

He added: “No one will notice when Trump leaves. The state of Florida will be better off when Trump takes his Soros-fueled, dumpster fire of a campaign to San Francisco, where it will fit right in.”

In a bid to mend fences with Florida supporters, Trump hosted a surprise pizza party for his backers during a visit to a Fort Meyers restaurant, U-turning on his earlier comments and calling Florida a “great place.”

While DeSantis has not officially thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming presidential election, he has been tipped to join the race for the Republican nomination against Trump.

Never Back Down was started by Ken Cuccinelli, a former Virginia attorney general who had a high-ranking role in Trump’s Homeland Security Department. The political group has reported raising £24 million ($30 million.)

One wing of the group has been raising money that could be transferred to DeSantis should he get in the 2024 race.

A different wing has begun running pro-DeSantis ads and pushing back aggressively against Trump in what’s increasingly become a bitter campaign.

And this week former Nevada AG Adam Laxalt, formerly a close ally of Trump, was announced as the new chairman of the Never Back Down PAC.

Laxalt chaired the former president’s campaign in Nevada in 2020 and has repeated his false claims of fraud about that race, won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Laxalt was a public face of many of Trump campaign’s lawsuits in the swing state that challenged election rules and results. The ex-president endorsed Laxalt in the 2022 Senate race won by Catherine Cortez Masto, who was considered to be among the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents in the midterm elections.

But Laxalt, who roomed with DeSantis in naval officer training, has remained a close friend of the Governor, after working with him as Navy judge advocate generals and served in Iraq.
