Democratic lawmaker says Donald Trump 'needs to be shot' in TV interview

RA Democratic Delegate had to rapidly correct herself after saying live on MSNBC on Sunday (June 18) that former President Donald Trump ‘needs to be shot’.

Stacey Plaskett, a non-voting member of the House who represents the U.S. Virgin Islands, was speaking about Trump’s indictment in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case when she put her foot in her mouth. Trump was blasted by Plaskett for “having the classified information for Americans” and having the ability to share it with “anyone and everyone who comes through” his resort.

She said: “And he needs to be shot – stopped.” Despite the slip up Plaskett continued with the interview, saying that Trump will “have his day in court.”

She also criticised Republicans for promoting the idea that there’s a “two-tiered system” of Justice, claiming they want to “allow them to get away with more than everyday Americans.” According to Plaskett Republicans’ cynicism of the Department of Justice and the FBI is “propaganda,” MailOnline reports.

Numerous GOP politicians have alleged that President Joe Biden equipped the DOJ with the plan to arrest Trump, his political arch-nemesis. Special Counsel Jack Smith was appointed by Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland to deal with the Trump documents case and the DOJ’s investigation into the January 6 attack on the Capitol, similarly to how Special Counsel Robert Mueller had dealt with the Trump-related Russia investigation.

Since serving as one of the House Democratic impeachment managers for Trump’s second impeachment over his role in causing the January 6 insurrection, Plaskett, who was elected to her role in 2014, has had a much higher profile.

She is currently a ranking member of the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which was formed by Republicans after they took control of the House in January.

Multiple Republicans as well as conservative influencers and news outlets took the opportunity to react to her mistake online. One Twitter user commented: “Quite the Freudian slip from Stacey Plaskett.”

The right-leaning Daily Caller’s Twitter account concurred: “Freudian slip?” The founder of Students for Trump Ryan Fourier simply remarked: “Lock her up!”

On Tuesday Trump pleaded not guilty of 37 federal counts in relation to his mishandling of classified documents. He then returned to Bedminster, New Jersey, his summer abode, before giving a trademark rebellious speech about the case.

Despite his recent legal issues the former President continues his campaign to run in the 2024 Republican primary race. Trump will make an appearance at a large conservative conference in the D.C. area this weekend, and will headline an Independence Day-themed rally outside of Greenville, South Carolina on July 1.
