David Cameron's stark warning to US: Back Ukraine funding or risk Putin’s 'Hitler’ war

Lord Cameron has urged the United States Congress to pass its latest funding package for Ukraine, or risk a repeat of Hitler-style 1930s aggression from Russia.

The Foreign Secretary made the rare move of dropping “all diplomatic niceties” in urging Congress to back the Bill, which is increasingly the subject of opposition from Republicans.

Writing in The Hill, Lord Cameron said he does not want the West to show the same weakness displayed against Putin in 2008, nor the “uncertainty of the response” seen after the 2014 invasion of Crimea.

He warned that history, both from the 20th century and more recent, only shows that giving in to tyrants breeds further bloodshed.

Lord Cameron said: “I do not want us to show the weakness displayed against Hitler in the 1930s.

“He came back for more, costing us far more lives to stop his aggression.”

He batted away concerns by right-wing Republicans that further funding for the war will only escalate deaths and loss, pointing out that “Each time Putin has rattled his sober about escalation – and each time it has been empty rhetoric”.

The former PM argues that continued funding of the war in Ukraine “goes to the heart of what both sides of the aisle stand for. What both our countries stand for”.

He said: “We fight aggression. We stand up for freedom. We stick by our friends. We show this dangerous, uncertain world that we are unbending in our will. And we win.”

Yesterday the US Senate voted through a £75billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

However it now faces a tough time in the House of Representatives, with speaker Mike Johnson criticising the whopping spending plan and indicating he may block it.

While 22 Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell backed the Bill, Republicans remain divided and have previously voted it down.

Donald Trump has criticised the Bill for its lack of funding for the US-Mexico border.

Joe Biden has now urged House Republicans to pass the legislation, arguing the Bill “is standing up to Putin. Opposing it is playing into Putin’s hands”.

He warned: “History is watching.”

President Zelensky thanked Senators for passing the Bill, saying he was “grateful” that “continued US assistance helps to save human lives from Russia terror”.

Lord Cameron said the UK-US partnership defending freedom around the world is “personal for me”.

He explained that his grandfather fought on the beaches of Normandy, while under covering fire from US warships; and as PM he ordered UK forces to join with the US in driving ISIS out of Syria and Iraq.

In the short time since he became Foreign Secretary, he’s already sided with the US over October 7th, the Houthi attacks and continued support for Ukraine.
