Dave Portnoy places massive bet on Super Bowl LVIII in three-word post that divides fans

Controversial Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has revealed his pick for Super Bowl LVIII. He shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he’s placed a whopping £500,000 bet on the Kansas City Chiefs to win against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.

“500K what? Pennies?” one user cheekily responded to Portnoy’s post. “Confirmed Niners win,” another user predicted, earning over 240 likes.

This isn’t the first time Portnoy has made a big bet on a crucial football match. At the start of 2024, he bet £1 million that his old university, Michigan, would beat Alabama at the Rose Bowl.

Portnoy also placed a bet on the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans game, predicting it would exceed 43.5 points. When his prediction came true, he quickly shared his winnings on social media.

“This guy. This guy. We fly in this country. I said double up. I don’t care, sports, stock market, money, money, money, money. Let’s go. Easy money,” the 46 year old said in a video. But Portnoy wasn’t the only one betting big on the Chiefs for Super Bowl LVIII.

Rap star Drake revealed on Instagram that he’d put down a $1.15 million bet on the Chiefs, saying he couldn’t “bet against the Swifties.” If his bet pays off, he’ll pocket a cool $2,346,000, all thanks to Taylor Swift.

With both Portnoy and Drake placing hefty bets on Kansas City, it’s no wonder Super Bowl LVIII is set to be one of the most bet-on Super Bowls in recent years.

It’s estimated that NFL fans will bet nearly $23 billion, with 68 million Americans planning to place a wager on the Big Game, according to Forbes.

As for Portnoy, he’ll be among the many Americans hoping their bet pays off. Given the size of his Super Bowl bet, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s a bit more active on social media if his bet comes good.
