Daughter of detective in Alex Murdaugh murder case dies in crash


The three-year-old daughter of a detective who played a key role in the Alex Murdaugh murder investigation has died in a crash.

Detective Sergeant Daniel Greene family was involved in a crash on Round O Road, South Carolina, at around 11.30am local time on Sunday, July 30, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has said.

Three-year-old Carter Greene was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina after the incident. But the sheriff’s office says she died a short while later.

A statement says Det Sgt. Greene’s county-issued SUV left the road before colliding with a tree. It says the incident was a “single-vehicle” crash.

The officer was off-duty at the time of the crash. Det Sgt Greene, his wife, and another child were taken to MUSC with “severe, non-life-threatening injuries”.

A CCSO spokesman said: “With great sorrow, the  Colleton County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of three-year-old Carter Greene. Carter is the daughter of Colleton Detective Sgt. Daniel Greene and Ashley Taylor Greene.

“Greene and his family were involved in a single-car crash around 11.30am on Round O Rd, Sunday, July 30, when his county-issued SUV left the road, colliding into a tree.

“CARE flight med-evaced his daughter to MUSC for medical treatment, where she was later pronounced deceased due to the severity of her injuries. Colleton Fire-Rescue also transported him, his current wife, and another child to MUSC to treat severe, non-life-threatening injuries.”

The county says South Carolina Highway Patrol is now investigating the incident. CCSO says it will now be “reviewing its policies”.

Greene was one of the first officers on the scene on June 7, 2021 after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were shot multiple times at their rural estate. He later testified during a trial that eventually saw Alex Murdaught convicted for both murders.

The former attorney is serving two life sentences for the killings. He is also facing further charges resulting to financial crimes.
