Peter Wright has issued an apology to Chris Dobey over his ‘Mickey Mouse’ comments about his rival’s Masters win last year. Snakebite launched a rant attacking what Dobey had achieved in the game after he was confronted with suggestions that he shouldn’t have been awarded a place in the Darts Premier League.
Reigning Masters champion Dobey, who was one of the eight players to compete in the tournament last year, had been overlooked despite outperforming Wright at the PDC World Championships back in December.
Dobey’s first big win at PDC premier event came last year when he lifted the 2023 Masters where he defeated the likes of Rob Cross and Wright. He was named in last year’s Premier League off the back of that victory – along with Wright – but was omitted for this year’s edition despite reaching the quarter-final stages of the World Championship.
Wright only made it to the second round at Ally Pally and is not in the best form – leading to questions about his spot in the Premier League. Snapping back, Snakebite called out darts commentator Chris Mason for suggesting Dobey deserved to be selected over him as he went on a rant.
He said: “It was to shut Chris Mason up, thinking Chris Dobey should be in the Premier League. What’s he won? He’s won the Masters, a Mickey Mouse tournament. That’s all he’s won.
“Has he won the European? Has he won a proper major? No he hasn’t. Well, he shouldn’t be in the Premier League. Yes he’s the better player the last year, so what? What’s he won? I’ve won two world titles, two World Cups, two Europeans, Matchplay and whatever else.”
After his rant started to take off on social media, Wright issued an apology to Dobey, insisting that it ‘wasn’t a personal dig’. He wrote: “I would like to apologise to Chris Dobey, it wasn’t meant to be a dig at him personally, it was about being picked for the premiere league [sic] and the criticism about being picked over Chris Dobey. Not that I know if it was a choice between us or not.”
Wright is playing in the Premier League this season alongside darts sensation Luke Littler, who he admitted was inspiring him to challenge for tournaments again. The 53-year-old admitted earlier this year that he has ‘got rid’ of his all trophies in a bid to start afresh and fire himself up to win more in 2024.
“I’ve already said I’m lucky to get in the Premier League. It’s because of Luke Humphries winning four tournaments at the end, it’s not my fault everyone else didn’t try and stop him,” he added.
“I’m going to start playing darts properly in the Premier League and shut everyone up. I feel more determined to shut all these boys up in the back room who think they should be in the Premier League. Work hard. Win stuff.”
