Daniel Khalife was arrested only twelve miles from the Wandsworth prison he dramatically escaped from earlier this week.
A new map reveals how the fugitive remained around the west London area, staying in close vicinity to HMP Wandsworth.
While the Metropolitan Police initially said that the arrest took place around Chiswick, in west London, they later confirmed that Khalife was in fact arrested on a canal towpath near Rowdell Road, Northolt, in west London.
Khalife dramatically escaped Wandsworth prison on Wednesday after strapping himself to the underside of a lorry while wearing a chef’s uniform.
The small area that Khalife covered since his escape came as a surprise to many following an initial panic that he may have tried to leave the country.
Extra security checks were imposed at airports and ports throughout the country, leading to long delays for passengers
Police officers also searched all car boots at the Eurotunnel and at Dover in case he was trying to stow away.
However, as the days passed, the search for Khalife centred around the capital, particularly in west London.
Armed officers and police dogs searched the area while a police boat was deployed to patrol the River Thames.
Police had also been intensively reviewing CCTV footage as a police helicopter scoured parts of west and south west London in recent days and nights.
Khalife was arrested today after a brave police officer dramatically pulled him off a bicycle as he cycled down a canal towpath in the UB5 postcode area of north-west London – just over 12 miles from HMP Wandsworth.
After police announced his arrest, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “very pleased” Khalife was now in custody.
The police acknowledged that the public had been “inconvenienced” at borders by the search.
Commander Dominic Murphy said: “These are not decisions we take really lightly and it was really important to us, and for the investigations, and clearly for the country – this man was charged with breaches of the Official Secrets Act.”
Commander Murphy said that the last confirmed sighting of the suspect was in Chiswick, Hounslow – close to the Church Street and Chiswick Mall area.
Commander Murphy also revealed the police had received more than 100 calls from the public to report possible sightings last night and this morning.
The Metropolitan Police Commander added that anyone who helped or supported Khalife in his escape will face justice, amid ongoing questions as to how he escaped the prison.
Khalife has since been charged with being unlawfully at large and being an escaped prisoner.
The 21-year-old was being held in Wandsworth Prison until his trial for terrorism offences in November.
