‘Dangerous’ chino trouser and blue shirt clothing combo banned by students’ union

A university students’ union has issued a blanket ban on anyone wearing chinos and a blue shirt.

Cardiff University Students’ Union (CUSU) issued the surprisingly severe edict after it said some students wearing the clothing engaged in “dangerous behaviour”.

The educational entertainment venue said anyone wearing the outfit combination would be refused entry to the Wednesday club night at the union.

Traditionally Wednesday night at university is associated with an evening out for members of sporting clubs.

However, CUSU said a ban had come into force after “reckless, dangerous and incredibly irresponsible” behaviour by a group of male students on October 4.

The BBC reports the ban is temporary and that an email had been sent to members of the university’s Athletic Union.

According to the broadcaster an incident is understood to have occurred when students were queueing to enter the Students’ Union.

The email read: “Fortunately, security were able to intervene and safely disperse the crowd, however, the situation could have easily escalated into a major incident had they not acted promptly.

“If any group knows who the males were that caused this incident, I advise the committee to approach Athletic Union staff and the matter can be dealt with.

“Whilst we understand that this approach might not be favourable with all, until we are confident that those behaviours have been rooted out, we will continue with this restriction.”

The ban on wearing blue shirts and chinos does not apply to any other university buildings, the university said.

Cardiff University said the Students’ Union acts independently, but it added: “It is our established practice to proactively respond to behaviour concerns so we can ensure that our events are safe, accessible and comfortable, and we thank the student body for their support in achieving this.

“The current clothing restrictions are temporary, not aimed at a specific group and in direct response to a specific recent incident.”

The classic chino shade of trouser is said to have been first invented in the 1880s in India by British Lieutenant Sir Harry Lumsden.

Legend has it Sir Lumsden converted his standard issue white trouser into a shade of brown using a dye made from coffee and spices.

The resulting colour, dubbed ‘khaki, comes from the Urdu word meaning ‘soil or dust coloured’.
