A dad’s “lazy” take on the classic winter dish for Brits – the humble cottage pie – has gone viral on TikTok.
Jono Yates runs the ultimate foodie page on TikTok (@onlyscrans) and has left viewers divided over his unusual twist on the dish – which he proudly dubs “the lazy person’s cottage pie”.
In the viral video, the dad-of-one uses frozen waffles instead of potatoes to top the mincemeat of a traditional cottage pie.
With 1.4 million views, over 23,000 likes and 600 comments, the post divided users with some deeming it a “crime” – but Jono, from Cheshire, stands by his hack.
He says it shaves off 40 minutes of extra cooking time but doesn’t scrimp on taste and simply adds to the flavour.

He told he told Need To Know: “It tastes incredible – the waffles crisp up on the top giving it an extra element of texture you don’t get with mash.”
The quick hack leaves the devoted family man more time to spend with his daughter Luna, five, and wife, Sarah, 30.
He added: “My daughter is at the age where she wants to play with her dad as soon as she gets home from school until she goes to bed.
“Potato waffles have all the energy and goodness she’d get from a mash, with no compromise on taste, but it means I can spend an extra 30-40 minutes giving her the attention she demands.
“[It gives me] more time to spend doing something more productive than mashing potatoes.”
With the dish traditionally involving mashed potato, the potato waffle version has left TikTok users divided.
Lou commented: “This is a crime against food,” while another user commented: “Ahh man this just makes me sad, you’ve ruined the cottage pie and the waffles there.”
Another said: “It looks like sadness.” Another person said: “That is NOT cottage pie.” Luke added: “That’s not a cottage pie anymore, I believe the call that a council flat pie.”
Another user joked: “And if you can’t be bothered to make the mince just use a pot noodle.” Sean commented: “Nah man. Just don’t make it if [you] can’t be bothered. Absolute gremlin.”
However, Ellie defended the hack along with a few others, and commented: “Why do I think this would be amazing.”
Thom added: “I can’t see why people are slating this it looks amazing.”
