Britain’s worst child serial killer Lucy Letby had one despicable word to say to the families of the babies she killed.
Letby, 33, was sentenced to a whole life order after jurors convicted her of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit in 2015 and 2016.
The killer nurse’s evil actions appalled the country and led to an inquiry into how she was able to murder after colleagues raised concerns about her with hospital bosses.
When she was sentenced on August 23 the public gallery at Manchester Crown Court was filled with the families of the victims and their supporters.
But cowardly Letby’s refusal to attend her sentencing devastated families and prompted a law change which would see defendants dragged into court to hear their sentence.
In a victim impact statement, one of the grieving mums told the court how Letby had offered parents just a single word in reaction to the murders.
The mother of Child D, a baby girl murdered in 2015, said: “Lucy Letby had a chance to say something to us all – parents of the victims – and she had only one word: ‘unimaginable’.
“Her wicked sense of entitlement and abuse of her role as a trusted nurse is a scandal.
“Lucy Letby. You failed God and the plans he had for (Child D). You even called it fate. You were clearly disconnected with God.”
The statement related to an exchange in court between Letby and her barrister, Ben Myers KC, during the trial.
When asked for her thoughts on what the parents have gone through, Letby had replied: “It’s unimaginable.”
Another mum, of Child A, who was murdered by Letby, and Child B, who she attempted to kill, said: “You thought it was your right to play God with our children’s lives.”
Last week it emerged that Letby has formally lodged a bid to challenge her convictions at the Court of Appeal.
Prosecutors are also due to announce whether they intend to seek a retrial for Letby on a number of outstanding allegations.
Jurors in her trial were unable to reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder in relation to five children.
A hearing is scheduled to take place at Manchester Crown Court on Monday (September 25) when the Crown Prosecution Service will state its intentions.
Letby, from Hereford, denied all the offences. She was cleared of two counts of attempted murder.
But the jury of seven women and four men could not reach verdicts on allegations Letby attempted to murder three baby girls, Child H, Child J and Child K.
They also could not reach verdicts over two counts of attempted murder against Child N and an allegation she tried to murder Child Q.
