A huge fire across the horizon has been filmed from the island of Corfu, more than 500 miles northwest of Rhodes, where raging fires have forced the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people.

A warning was issued at 9.15pm GMT from 112 Greece for multiple areas of the island of Corfu.

Earlier on Sunday (July 23), Greek authorities had warned that seven regions, including Rhodes, could be hit by further fires.

In the footage, a plume of smoke can be seen rising from the fires into the evening sky.

Just after 9pm on Sunday, Greece 112, a government-affiliated emergency channel on Twitter urged people in 10 different areas in and around Corfu to evacuate,

The warning said: “Attention #Corfu #Kerkyra If you are in Rou, Katavolo, Kentroma, Tritsi, Kokokila, Sarakiniatika, Plagia, Kalami, Vlachatika, Kavalerena, evacuate now to Ipsos.”

It reported that there was “wildfire in the area” and called on citizens to “follow the instructions of the authorities.”

A video purporting to show the fires in Corfu caused immediate panic as fellow residents frantically tried to determine the exact location of the flames.
