Ask Sarkar is facing criticism over an “utterly grotesque” tweet about the Titanic submersible.
The left-wing commentator, who describes herself as a communist, used the horror incident to suggest the rich should be taxed more.
Her post comes amid a desperate rescue mission for the sub, named Titan, which has gone missing with five people on board during a voyage to the Titanic shipwreck.
Ms Sarkar said: “If the super-rich can spend £250,000 on vanity jaunts 2.4 miles beneath the ocean then they’re not being taxed enough.”
But the tweet has sparked a furious backlash from other Twitter users.
Lord Austin, a former Labour MP who now sits as an independent in the Lords, said: “Look how this virtuous caring communist reacts as five human beings – including a teenager – might be gasping their last breaths and suffering an awful fate.
And the hard left wonder why people don’t vote for them.”
GB News presenter and former Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney said: “What an utterly grotesque tweet. People are likely about to die and Ash Sarkar makes this about rich people paying more tax? Have a day off, love.”
TalkTV presenter Mike Graham said: “Charming from the ‘luxury communist’.”
YouTuber Mahyar Tousi added: “Evil and heartless tweet purely based on envy and hate.”
Journalist Matthew Stadlen branded it a “vile tweet”.
Comedian Leo Kearse said it was “the left in a nutshell”, adding: “Zero compassion, just seething envy that someone, somewhere has something that they don’t. And instead of working to get rich too, leftists want to make the rich as poor as they are.”
Political commentator Adrian Hilton said: “Of all the tweets I’ve seen about this unfolding tragedy, I think this is the callous nadir.
“The men who are dying an agonising death are husbands, sons, friends, colleagues, mentors. This is a time for humanity and compassion, not enmity and salvation by taxation.”
The 6.7m (22ft)-long OceanGate Expeditions vessel lost communication with tour operators on Sunday while about 435 miles south of St John’s, Newfoundland, during a voyage to the Titanic shipwreck off the coast of Canada.
The sub, which has British billionaire adventurer Hamish Harding on board, reportedly had a 96-hour oxygen supply in case of emergencies.
As of yesterday afternoon it was thought just 20 hours of oxygen remained, meaning it would run out at some point this morning.
The US coast guard has been leading an international rescue effort which was stepped up after underwater noises were heard on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, although experts have been unable to determine the cause of the sound.
