Commons erupts at Tory MP's brutal Labour slap down as cringing Rachel Reeves watches on

The House of Commons erupted on Tuesday after a brutal slap down by a Tory MP against the Labour Party.

Speaking after the King’s Speech, Siobhan Baillee said: “The public service bit of this job motivates me but it’s not what hits the headline.

“I am often asked ‘How do you survive with everybody backstabbing, doing their own thing, and out to get each other?’ ‘I just smile and say ‘I don’t hang around with the Labour Party.’”

The joke resulted in laughter from across both the Labour and Conservative benches as leader Sir Keir Starmer joined in the joke.

However, a cringing Rachel Reeves was seen watching on unimpressed with the joke.

Controversially, the King’s Speech introduced an Offshore Petroleum Licensing Bill which supports the future oil and gas fields.

This policy has proved controversial as the UK tries to shift further towards net zero and create a greener economy.

Writing on Express.co.uk, Josh Emden was not impressed with the King’s Speech or the new policy. He said: “Extracting fossil fuels in the UK makes almost no difference to domestic energy security.

“There is also no such thing as ‘British’ oil and gas. Once licences are issued to huge multinational companies, the oil and gas is theirs to sell on international markets as they see fit.”

While there was a lot of focus on King Charles and Rishi Sunak during the King’s Speech, audiences watching at home were also focusing on the presenters.

Viewers watching the BBC’s coverage were left outraged by SNP politician Kirsty Blackman after she criticised the visuals of the event.

Ms Blackman said: “People are sitting at home unable to pay their electricity bills and they’re sitting at home trying to work out how they are getting to the next week.

“And then you see all of this pomp and ceremony, you hear about these sapphires and rubies, and it just feels so far removed from the daily lives and the daily struggles that so many people are going through.”

Following her outburst, people took to X to accuse Ms Blackman of dragging down the history of the UK.
