Commons erupts as Rishi Sunak savages Angela Rayner in brutal PMQs slap down

Rishi Sunak took a swipe at Sir Keir Starmer over the Angela Rayner row as Prime Minister’s Questions kicked off today.

The Labour leader used his first question to ask the Prime Minister about Liz Truss’s new book.

Sir Keir said: “I’m privileged to be the proud owner of a copy of the former prime minister’s new book.

“It’s a rare unsigned copy, it’s quite the read. She claims the Tory party’s disastrous kamikaze budget that triggered chaos for millions was, her words, the happiest moment of her premiership.

“Has the Prime Minister met anyone with a mortgage that agrees?”

But Mr Sunak replied: “All I’d say is he ought to spend a bit less time reading that book and a bit more time reading the deputy leader’s tax advice.”

The PM’s response prompted a noisy reaction in the Commons with Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle forced to intervene.

Sir Keir accused Mr Sunak of an attempt to “smear a working-class woman”.

It comes as Ms Rayner has faced ongoing scrutiny over her living situation from a decade ago.

Greater Manchester Police is investigating the Labour deputy leader over the sale of her former council house in Stockport.

They are looking at tax matters as well as whether she may have given false information for the electoral register.

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP has promised to resign if she is found to have committed a crime over the accusations but said she “followed the rules at all times”.
