Veteran comedian Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown has been cancelled by yet another venue after Rhyl Pavilion decided to block the 78-year old from reappearing next year.
Just a month after the Grangetown-born performer appeared at the North Wales theatre, bosses there have since decreed that his act fails to fit in with their ‘inclusive programme’, so have turned down a request from Brown for a 2024 show.
Rhyl joins venues in Sheffield, Consett, Workington and Edinburgh in turning the comic away, angering many of his fans in the process.
Brown’s tour manager Ritchie Hoyle posted a statement on Facebook, telling people that his client won’t be heading back to North Wales next year.
“Unfortunately gang, I’m sorry to say Roy will not be returning to Rhyl Pavilion,” said Hoyle. “We asked for a 2024 date after this year’s show and received this (below statement) back from the venue.
“I will look for another venue in the area who will hopefully host the show.”
According to the Daily Post, a spokesperson for the company responsible for the Pavilion, Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, allegedly told Brown’s management: “After careful consideration, we have taken the decision that the ‘Chubby Brown’ show no longer fits with our future plans for the theatre, or the inclusive programme we aim to offer.”
In April, Durham County Council barred Brown from performing at Consett’s Empire Theatre, with Hoyle insisting that the “snowflakes would not get us down”.
Last summer, he was due to go on stage at The Platform, in Morecambe, but Lancaster City Council put a stop to it, with chief executive Mark Davies saying that Brown’s shows were not “compatible with these values”, with the council claiming that parts of his act were “outwardly racist, homophobic and misogynistic”.
Fans reacted angrily to the news, venting their frustrations in the replies to Hoyle’s post.
One commented: “Getting pathetic now. Roy, I can stick a marquee up in my back garden and I promise you we will fill it with all the people that still have a sense of humour. I guarantee you it would be a great night.”
Another wrote: “When the hell are these people going to wake up and learn? People are still paying money to go and watch Chubby… Chubby is still hilarious and telling very funny jokes, to an audience that want to hear proper comedy!! If you don’t like it, then don’t buy a ticket!”
A third added: “Terrible! I was at the last show in Rhyl and thought it was fantastic. Laughed from beginning to end. Pavilion were very happy taking my money when I paid to watch the show, but won’t allow us to see him again at the venue!”
And a fourth said: “What a country we live in where we listen to people who are offended by the contents of a show that they aren’t going to see it. The whole world is an absolute joke!”
It comes after the comic – real name Royston Vasey – claimed he was told he will not be invited back to Crewe’s Lyceum Theatre. Further performances have been cancelled in Colne.
