Clouds of bees swarm highway after Florida traffic accident

Drivers faced hold-ups after a truck hauling one million bees was involved in a traffic accident on a major route in Florida.

Clouds of insects swarmed US Highway 301 in Duval County after the truck was in a collision with a tractor-trailer on the busy route at the entrance ramp to I-10 East.

Eye witnesses told reporters that the tractor-trailer slammed into the truck, which was carrying stacks of beehives.

On impact, large numbers of bees took to the skies, although officials said they were not aggressive and no injuries were reported.

Florida Highway Patrol said the incident occured around 3.15am on Tuesday (May 2) when the tractor-trailer being driven by a 26-year-old man impacted the truck.

“There are thousands of bees in the area after the collision,” the station ClickOrlando reported troopers as saying in a crash report.

It added that a beekeeper was called in to round up the escaped bees.

The beehive company later removed all hives still intact and took them away in another truck.

The highway patrol asked drivers to avoid the area as a precaution.
