Classmates team up for a close shave to cheer on football-mad cancer pal Harry

Rather than let their friend look like the odd one out, a dozen of his buddies stepped up and had their heads shaved in a show of support.

Earlier this year the football-mad youngster was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma.

He has been having chemotherapy and faces surgery.

But despite putting on a brave face, the nine-year-old was dreading losing his hair.

So 12 of his pals decided to shave their heads in solidarity.

They have raised over £30,000 for charity – and Harry has now met his Anfield hero Virgil Van Dijk.

The youngster started suffering from persistent pain in his right leg back in April.

Dad Andy, 53, and mum Nicola, 46, thought the Twyford Comets defender had just injured himself playing in a match.

After a visit to a physiotherapist, Harry was sent home on crutches with instructions to ice and compress his leg.

But with little improvement after 11 weeks Andy took his son to see a knee surgeon.

He said: “He phoned us that night and said ‘I’ve seen a crack
on the bone’. I thought ‘oh okay he’s got a broken leg’ and he goes ‘no, there’s a tumour’.”

Doctors confirmed Harry was suffering from Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma, so rare it accounts for less than one per cent of all cancers.

When he was told his hair would probably fall out due to the chemotherapy, Harry’s friends at Charvil Piggott Primary School in Berkshire organised a “Shaving Hair for Hazza” event.

The cash raised is going to Young Lives vs Cancer, which offers support to affected parents, such as free stays at a family house near to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

This week Harry will undergo surgery there to remove any bone and muscle in his leg which the cancer has affected.

His friends were happy to pose for the cameras once their locks had gone. “Harry’s been very stoic and has never wallowed in self pity.

“But he was worried about losing his hair,” said dad Andy. “It’s a very close-knit class. He was chuffed they all wanted to do it.”

And his spirits were lifted after Liverpool invited him to Anfield for last week’s derby with Everton.

“We had a great day and Harry was given a signed shirt. But the highlight was when Virgil Van Dijk came over to us and presented him with a signed captain’s armband.”
