Child dead and 23 missing after hippo capsizes canoe in Malawi

A one-year-old child has died and 23 people are reported missing after a hippopotamus charged at and capized a canoe in southern Malawi.

The 23 people are feared dead following an incident on Monday, May 15, authorities have said.

The canoe was believed to have been carrying 37 people across the Shire River heading towards Mozambique.

It was hit by the hippo in the Nsanje District.

Police officers, with the help of the World Food Program, rescued 13 people, reports ABC News. The Nsanje District Police Commissioner Dominic Mwandira said the program provided boats to aid the rescue.

Police fear the 23 missing people could be dead because it is more than a day since the search was launched. Locals reportedly say hippos can be a regular problem in the area, with some families calling for them to be relocated.
