Chelsea owner Todd Boehly may soon be able to bring Antonio Nusa to Stamford Bridge, with the player himself admitting that he could leave Club Brugge before the start of next season. Nusa is thought to have been admired by the Blues for a while after turning plenty of heads with his impressive performances in Belgium over the years.
The winger was one of many players targeted by Chelsea last summer but ended up staying at Club Brugge, where he remains tied down until 2027 as things stand. However, he has since opened the door to a move later this year by telling HLN that there is a ‘very high’ chance that he will seek a new challenge at the end of the season.
Nusa also confirmed that he turned down the opportunity to join Chelsea last summer, explaining: “We had a match, Osasuna at home I think. I knew about their interest, but I was not informed about the offer. After the match I turned on my phone and the messages kept coming. The news had leaked.
“I was shocked, but we had actually decided much earlier to stay in Bruges anyway. It surprised me too. I thought: ‘Wow, that’s a lot of money’. However, we had known for some time what we would do, so it didn’t cause me much stress. You think about it, but all in all I remained calm.
“Honestly, I never thought for a moment: ‘Maybe I will do it’. Another year of [Club Brugge] was the plan anyway. Even now this winter you never know what will happen, but that plan has remained unchanged.”
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will succeed in their efforts to sign Nusa in the summer, with their previous bid having reportedly been worth around £26million. Nusa previously admitted that it would be a ‘dream’ to play for a club of Chelsea’s size, insisting that every player in the game would be eager to test themselves at the highest level.
“I try not to think about it so much,” said Nusa in September. “I can’t focus on that, you know. I don’t think it’s good for me. We are talking about very big clubs and that’s where you dream of being in the future.
“I try not to think about money at all. There’s a lot of money in football, so that’s not what’s on my mind. It’s where I can develop best and become as good as possible.”
