Chelsea owner Todd Boehly can win over supporters as alarming interest 'maintained'

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has the opportunity to win over supporters by tying down England international Conor Gallagher to a long-term contract, amid reports that talks have stalled somewhat. The midfielder looked up for sale in the summer amid some alarming interest, from a fan’s point of view, and rivals Tottenham could make a renewed offer in January if an extended contract has not been agreed.

The 23-year-old is a fan’s favourite having come through the Chelsea academy and is seen as one of their budding stars. Last season Gallagher secured his first team spot and made 45 appearances for the Blues.

However, during a summer overhaul Boehly was willing to sell the home-grown international with Spurs joined by Brighton, Newcastle and West Ham in showing their interest. This season Gallagher has done enough to impress new boss Mauricio Pochettino and has started all seven Premier League games so far.

However, contract talks between Chelsea and the midfielder have reportedly ‘not significantly progressed recently’, according to 90min as Tottenham’s interest is ‘maintained’. The popular youngster has also been captain three times this season, a clear message that Pochettino wants him to stay at Stamford Bridge. With his current contract due to expire in the summer 2025, a lengthy extension would deter any suitors.

Boehly has spent over £1billion on players since buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May last year. The owner could see Gallagher as an asset to recoup some of that gigantic spend if he continues to impress before the transfer window opens again.

West Ham reportedly had a £40m bid rejected in July and his value to Chelsea has only increased since then after a successful early season. Tottenham also had a transfer deadline day bid rejected for the same amount and will have to come back with an increase offer.
