Chelsea chief Todd Boehly plots £50m January cash boost by holding Tottenham to ransom

Todd Boehly could bank a tidy sum this winter after attaching a hefty price tag to Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is reportedly eyeing up the 23-year-old, but nabbing him from Spurs’ cross-city rivals will not come cheap.

Gallagher has been one of Chelsea’s standout players this season, notching four Premier League assists and captaining the side in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

But Boehly needs to balance the books after spending extortionately on transfers over the past 18 months. As a Chelsea academy graduate, the sale of Gallagher would be accounted for as pure profit, which is an effective way of staying on the right side of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Mauricio Pochettino would have to be compensated heavily for losing the midfielder, however, and The Sun claim that Chelsea will not be drawn to the negotiating table for less than £50million.

Spurs are rumoured to be keen on the England international, but Postecoglou’s side will only move for him if they sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Fulham and Bayern Munich are both believed to be interested in the Dane.

Gallagher has long been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, but Pochettino made it clear during the summer that the former Crystal Palace loanee would be a key member of his squad.

Lesley Ugochukwu is also gunning for minutes, while Romeo Lavia and Carney Chukwuemeka will not be content to collect dust on the bench when they return to match fitness.

With Chelsea struggling in mid-table, Spurs are in the thick of a top-four battle this season, and Postecoglou’s exciting brand of football is likely to attract top talent in the transfer market.
