Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has warned Todd Boehly that it would be ‘crazy’ for him to be denied a say in transfer decisions when the January window opens. The Blues have been the Premier League’s biggest spenders over the last few seasons, with Boehly not afraid to open his wallet when it comes to player recruitment.
Not many of Chelsea’s big-money signings have paid off, though, with the Blues languishing in mid-table after losing eight of their 19 league games so far this season. It seems clear that another busy window will be needed in January and Pochettino is adamant that he should have a say in the recruitment process at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s obvious that the head coach, coach or manager is crazy to think he won’t be involved in any decisions for the future in my area,” said the Chelsea boss. “Of course we will share with the owners, the sporting director and I cannot conceive the idea of not being involved.
“It’s not only my advice it is about how we are sharing with the owners and the sporting directors. There is very good communication, we talk every single day and we will take decisions because we are all agreed. For me, it is more about being consistent. That is the challenge.
“With the players that we have we can have a very good season but we need to improve. We were talking about the starting XI of Chelsea being the youngest ever against Crystal Palace and that is a thing that only with time we can turn in a good result with a very positive way to play.
“There is talent but that is not enough. It is also about mentality, experience together and with time we will arrive at the level where we can compete for big things. If we need to change something to improve of course we are more than open. We are very analytical and we always analyse ourselves to help the team is the best way possible.”
Pochettino also jumped to the defence of misfiring Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who has struggled to adapt to life at Stamford Bridge since joining the Blues over the summer. The 22-year-old has more yellow cards than goals in the Premier League this season but his manager believes that he simply needs more time to find his feet.
“We need to believe in him and give him time and it was nice that when he missed the chances the fans were very supportive,” said Pochettino. “They appreciated him and the team. Only with time will he relax and score. Already he is scoring.
“We will check with history to see if a striker or offensive player arrived from a different club out of England and if they performed in their first season. We are not months in and we wonder if he scores goals like Drogba or Hasselbaink. He came from Spain where he wasn’t playing too much and is a very good prospect.
“The pressure here is to touch the ball and do something fantastic. Little by little we will be more consistent and grow, be more mature and our experience will make us better.”
