Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino may have dropped biggest hint yet on Ivan Toney transfer

The situation is different at Arsenal, where Mikel Arteta has Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as his main striking options. United signed Rasmus Hojlund for £72m in the summer but the Dane is yet to score, and Toney could be brought in to compete with the 20-year-old or even play alongside him.

But it would also be wise for Toney to exercise some caution, given the decline of some top strikers that have gone to Stamford Bridge and flopped. Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were shipped off within 18 months of their big-money arrivals, following a long line of strikers to have struggled to find the goals at Chelsea.

In any case, Pochettino looks primed to repeat his work at Spurs with Chelsea after seeing it produce some fine results, especially with Kane.

Perhaps Toney is the man to turn their season around, but the Argentinian will have to wait another 10 weeks before he can even think of having him in his team.
