The cheapest supermarket in the UK has been revealed, beating its rival by just a penny, the latest report has claimed.
Aldi came out on top as the cheapest shop for a basket of groceries of 33 everyday essentials, research published by trade magazine The Grocer revealed.
The popular store beat rival Lidl by just 1p for the cheapest shop, while both retailers were more than £10 cheaper than other supermarkets.
Aldi also offered the lowest price for 24 of the 33 products measured.
The magazine said: “Aldi edged out Lidl by just 1p in the most hotly contested battle between the discounters to date.
“At £55.43 for 33 staples, Aldi came out on top in this week’s shop — having lost out to its rival in the last head-to-head survey.
“In May, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s were reasonably competitive versus Aldi and Lidl.
“But this time they were all well off the discounters’ pace.”
Unsurprisingly Waitrose came out as the most expensive with the essential shop being £20 more than Aldi.
Aldi and Lidl were closer followed by Asda where the shop was £10.13 more expensive and Tesco at £11.09 more.
Next up was Morrisons which came in £12.19 dearer and Sainsbury’s was £13.59.
Earlier this week consumer advice and comparison website Which? revealed that Lidl was the most affordable supermarket for BBQ essentials this summer.
The website said it was the “only retailer where shoppers can pick up all their barbecue food essentials for less than £30.”
