Britain’s most notorious prisoner Charles Bronson has told his ex-wife that he believes he will soon be freed. Bronson, who now goes by Charles Salvador, will learn his fate this week following his recent parole bid.
The Mirror reports that the 70-year-old inmate told his former wife, Irene Dunroe, who is also 70, that he anticipates being inside for a short period longer before being let out, after almost 50 years behind bars.
Ms Dunroe, who reportedly still refers to Bronson by his old name, Mick Peterson, said: “A Bentley car is going to come and pick him up when the day comes.
“It’s going to take him straight to the greasiest spoon cafe he can find so he can have a double breakfast of everything – double sausage, double egg.”
Ms Dunroe, who first got together with Bronson when the pair were 19, jested that the HMP Woodhill prisoner could come and stay in her garden shed once he’s released.
She quipped: “I said, ‘I can lock you in every night and let you out in the morning so you feel more at home’.”
Bronson, who was first detained for armed robbery as a 22-year-old in 1974, has stunned prison staff with his outrageous antics.
The Luton-born convict has staged rooftop protests, fought guards completely naked while covered in his own excrement, and even taken senior staff hostage.
During his parole hearing he said he was now “anti-crime”, although conceded he’d held nine rooftop demonstrations and had been involved in a total of 11 hostage sieges.
Making his case for freedom, Bronson said: “I am anti-crime, I am anti-violent, I just want to go out and do my art.”
His ex-wife told the Mirror that the thug-turned-artist was a victim of his past: “Mick is not a terrorist, rapist or murderer or paedophile. His crimes of violence are because he was getting violently treated.
“He has got stab wounds all over his back, one attack he was on life support, he was going to die. He has got to get out. In these last years he hasn’t had any violent treatment and he has behaved.”
She said: “He’s going to do loads of painting and he can’t wait to go to an art shop and pick paints and brushes.
“He’s going to spend 12 months selling his work and doing an exhibition. He’s hoping to get the money to get a little cottage in the countryside.
“He wants two dogs, Ronnie and Reggie, so he can go on nice, long walks.
“That’s all he wants. He is not going to cause any trouble. He’s too old.”
