Channel Tunnel workers' strike disrupts thousands of holiday travel plans

Thousands of holidaymakers were left in limbo yesterday as trains and shuttles to France stopped due to a strike by Channel Tunnel workers.

Services stopped at noon and passengers hoping to get away for the Christmas holiday were advised to stay at home due to the unexpected action by employees of Getlink, which operates the tunnel’s infrastructure.

Eurostar said it “had to cancel all trains to and from London until 3.30pm”.

The London terminal at St Pancras International was crowded with disappointed passengers and long lines of cars waited at the tunnel entrance in Kent.

The walkout came after trade unionists at Getlink rejected a Christmas bonus equivalent to just under £1,000, rather than the £3,000 they wanted.

An agreement was later reached and services were due to resume.

Eurotunnel apologised to those whose journeys were disrupted, adding: “LeShuttle services will resume progressively this evening and Eurostar tomorrow morning.”
