'Cash-stuffing' hack is saving internet users thousands – how does it work?

Cash-stuffing is a viral savings hack which has become increasingly popular thanks to TikTok.

The idea behind this method is based on the cash envelope system which has been used for generations.

This involves savers placing money into separate envelopes so it can be reserved for specific expenses.

For example, someone who is saving for a deposit on a house may have envelopes separated for rent, food and subscription services.

In doing this, savers have a better idea of how they are spending on utilities and where their money is going.

Recently, this cash envelope trick has been overhauled by TikTok users, utilising colourful binders, envelopes, and pens to sort out their finances.

Those who are social media mavens then post how they go about saving money using cash-stuffing and how it fits into their daily routine.

On TikTok, content creators who post videos about this savings trick have garnered 1.1 billion views.

There are popular accounts, such as @cashstuffingfix, which have gained around 510,000 followers and over six million likes.

In her last cash-stuffing video, she was able to put away $801 (£642.39) in her business start-up envelope thanks to tracking her expenditure.

Another content creator, @baddiesandbudgets, has found herself acquiring close to 700,000 followers and nearly seven million likes.

The latter creator, Jasmine Taylor from Texas, has now started a business sharing savings tricks with customers.

She started selling budget binders and other cash-cutting products to encourage people to save money better.

She explained: “We would usually take some money out in cash, such as our food budget allocation (for us this was £150 per month) and put it in envelopes.

“This technique is known as ‘cash stuffing’. We didn’t buy a fancy cash-stuffing wallet, which I’ve seen trending recently, as this is an additional cost.

“This technique works really well, as the money that you have is visible in front of you and not just a number on a statement.”
