Alcaraz announced his late withdrawal in a social media post on Tuesday. “I have been working in Monte Carlo and trying to recover until the last minute from an injured pronator teres in my right arm, but it was not possible and I cannot play,” he wrote.
“I was really looking forward to playing… See you next year!” It comes after a concerning training session on Monday, in which the 20-year-old struggled to his forehands.
Alcaraz was unable to grip the racket properly and mostly used the slice on his forehand, indicating that the forearm was causing him problems. Lorenzo Sonego will now take his place in the draw as a lucky loser to face Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday.
It’s the second year in a row that Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Monte-Carlo Masters. Last year, the two-time Major winner skipped the event due to post-traumatic arthritis in the left hand and muscular discomfort in the spine.
It also means that Alcaraz has still never won a match in Monte Carlo. His only appearance came in 2022, when he received a bye into the second round and lost to Sebastian Korda.
