Captain Tom Foundation blasted by charity lawyer for 'damaging' war hero's brand

A charity lawyer has taken aim at Captain Sir Tom Moore’s Foundation, despite saying that the NHS war hero “will always be somebody who is loved”.

The criticism comes as Channel 5 airs a documentary titled ‘In Captain Tom: Where did the Money Go’ on November 12, at 9pm.

The programme explores funds raised from the sale of Captain Tom’s three books where there were claims the money raised would go to The Captain Tom Foundation.

Liz Brownsell, partner and head of charities for Birketts said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore will always be somebody who is very much loved, and is seen as the nation’s grandfather. It’s really sad that the brand itself has been damaged.”

The charity lawyer added: “When you look on the foundation website it says ‘his autobiography and a children’s book’ will support his newly formed charity The Captain Tom Foundation.”

She also pointed to the prologue of his autobiography: “Astonishingly at my age, with the offer to write this memoir I’ve also been given the chance to raise even more money for the charitable foundation now established in my name.”

The Channel 5 documentary seeks to discover whether the UK was “misled” when donating millions of pounds to Captain Sir Tom Moore’s cause.

In October, Captain Tom’s daughter Ms Ingram-Moore confessed to pocketing £800,000 from books written by her father, claiming her father wanted the family to keep the profits. The family is also adamant that people buying the publications were never told their money was going to charity, a claim disputed in the documentary.

On TalkTV, Piers Morgan’s uncensored show, Mrs Ingram-Moore says the money made went into Club Nook Ltd, a firm separate to the charity, in his name.

Captain Tom raised around £38million for NHS Charities Together, and unfortunately died in early 2021 from covid-19, less than six months after being knighted.

Capitalising on the energy left in his wake, his family set up a foundation to honour his work and use his “brand” to raise money and awareness for a range of causes.

Despite winning the hearts of the nation, Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore has faced a series of allegations including recent scandals and controversies.
