Can you solve this puzzle about an elevator? It's a real brain teaser

Puzzles, brain teasers and riddles are an excellent way to pass the time while keeping your brain in tip top condition. Neurology experts are agreed that trying to solve puzzles is a fun and rewarding way to keep your mind active.

So here’s a particularly curious conundrum to challenge yourself with. Shared by the Bright Side website, it poses a simple question about one person’s behaviour as it relates to a lift.

A person lives on the 14th floor. When she goes downstairs, she always goes to the first floor.

But when she goes upstairs she only goes to the 10th floor and from there, she takes the stairs. However, when she’s in the elevator with someone, she always goes directly to the 14th floor.

How can we explain this behaviour?

That’s an odd one. Why does she travel directly to the 14th floor when she’s in the lift with other people but only goes to the 10th when she’s alone?

Can you work out the answer? Would you like a clue?

OK, here’s a hint, maybe think carefully about who the person is.

Don’t worry, if you can’t work it out, we’ve shared the answer below. But give it a bit more time, you’ll be really pleased with yourself if you get it right on your own.

Answer: The person is a child and she’s simply unable to reach the button in the lift that will take her to the 14th floor.

Were you able to work it out?

The above is a simple lateral thinking test aimed at sharpening your mind.

Research has found that people who keep their minds active are less likely to suffer from mental deterioration as they get older.

Some experts say that the more you test your brain through doing brain teasers, crosswords, and other mental exercises, the stronger and healthier it will be in the long term.
