Budget 2024: Angela Rayner furious as Commons explodes over Jeremy Hunt's brutal attack

Jeremy Hunt prompted a furious response from Angela Rayner as he cracked a joke about a council house row she is at the centre of.

The deputy Labour leader is facing questions over whether she should have been liable for capital gains tax when she sold the property in 2015.

As he delivered his Budget today, the Chancellor said: “I’ve also been looking at stamp duty relief for people who purchase more than one dwelling in a single transaction known as multiple dwellings relief.

“I see the deputy leader of the Labour Party paying close attention given her multiple dwellings.”

At this point, the Commons erupted as Ms Rayner shouted back at Mr Hunt.

Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing was forced to intervene, saying: “Too much excitement, we haven’t actually heard because we can’t hear what the Chancellor is trying to say.”

Mr Hunt said: “I’m sorry to disappoint her but multiple dwellings relief was not actually designed for her but intended to support investment in the private rented sector but an external evaluation found no strong evidence it had done so and that it was being regularly abused so I’m going to abolish it.”

He went on to announce a reduction in the higher rate of property capital gains tax.

He added: “That really is for you, Angela!”

His comment prompted further uproar in the Commons as MPs shouted.

Ms Rayner has denied any wrongdoing in the sale of the council house.
