Brits try American Popeyes for first time and claim their version is way better

TikTok users in Britain hailed the fast-food chain Popeyes, claiming the chicken joint was far superior in their homeland than in the US.

Hundreds of people shared their views on the restaurant after user @yourgirlest shared an eight-second video of a meal from Popeyes.

It was captioned: “POV: You thought Popeyes was better in the USA.”

Popeyes was first launched in New Orleans, Louisiana back in the Seventies, and is headquartered in Miami, Florida.

But seemingly despite its roots being firmly in the US, customers argue that the food quality is much better in the UK.

One TikTok user wrote: “UK Popeyes is better anyways.”

Another boasted: “I haven’t tried in USA but in the UK our Popeye’s is good.”

Not all viewers were convinced of the video, which has been liked more than 44,000 times.

A critic said: “Even the chicken looks dead.”

Meanwhile, one customer said the mash looked “a bit sus”, and another claimed: “You have to go to Louisiana and have the real Popeyes lol.”

However, another customer said the lack of quality food in the US was part of the reason they don’t get excited when brands transfer to the UK.

They added: “And this is why I’m done getting gassed about anything they have over in America because most of the things they bring over here are mid.”

Popeyes opened its first British store back in 2021 in Westfield Stratford, one of the UK’s biggest shopping malls in East London.

Tom Crowley, chief executive of Popeyes UK, confirmed earlier this year the US brand was set to have between five and 10 drive-through locations by the end of 2023.

He said: “We’re hugely excited to be opening our first drive-through in the UK. This is a critical format for us as we fully recognize the UK is underserved with exciting new brands opening in this space.

“The sustained demand we are seeing for Popeyes throughout the UK is incredible, we are confident that this will only increase with the launch of our drive-through restaurants of which we now have many in the pipeline for 2023 and into 2024.”
