Brits baffled as Easter eggs already on sale in Tesco – days after Christmas

Brits have been left baffled after Easter eggs appeared on shelves in Tesco just days after Christmas.

Chocolate eggs have materialised in supermarkets seemingly overnight following the holiday season, nearly three months ahead of the spring occasion.

Some have taken to social media to voice their outrage, with one shocked MP recording a video for his followers to ask whether Easter is “coming too early”.

Jake Berry, the Conservative MP for Rossendale and Darwen, took the issue to X, formerly known as Twitter, in a nearly 30-second rant.

He received mixed reactions, with some Britons equally shocked but others taking the chance to poke fun at the politician.

Posting on X, the MP said: “Now, I don’t want to be a complete and utter killjoy, but I’ve just run the gauntlet here at Tesco’s in Haslingden with my kids past all the discounted toys, only to see that the Easter bunny is already on the shelf.

“Easter. March 31 this year. Let me know in the comments below whether you think Easter is coming to our supermarkets and shops too early.”

A commenter reacting to the post was similarly outraged, saying her local supermarket “had Easter eggs in on Christmas Eve”.

The vast majority of those in the replies mocked the MP, who received a knighthood in October 2022, for failing to grasp public priorities.

One user wrote: “It’s difficult to know whether to be annoyed or relieved that you’re not doing some actual governing.”

And another sarcastically quipped: “Well done Jake. THESE are the important issues.”

But plenty of other Britons were shocked to discover Easter eggs sitting on supermarket shelves.

One said: “Easter eggs and hot cross buns in the supermarket. I know Easter is early this year but…”

A user said in the replies that their local Tesco had already dropped its dedicated festive shelves on Christmas Eve.

They said: “My local Tesco had already “de-Christmassed” the shelves and replaced them with Easter eggs when I popped in at 10pm on Xmas Eve.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “It’s still a few weeks until customers are able to choose from our full range of Easter products.

“However, we know some of our customers like to buy their eggs early so we have started selling a small selection in some of our stores.”
