Britons brace for chilly conditions as August to bring in weeks of downpours

Miserable weather will hit the UK in August as the country braces for weeks of downpours and chilly conditions, forecasts show.

Tomorrow will mark the start of another period of unsettled weather in Britain as wet and windy weather is expected to continue  – including heavy and thundery rain in some parts, the Met Office has forecast.

This “unsettled” weather type will continue throughout August. One UK city is even tipped to be drenched amid 10 days of wet weather.

Cold temperatures in some regions

With August’s wet weather, Britain will sometimes experience cool temperatures ranging from 0C to 10C, according to WXCharts’ weather maps.

For example, some parts of the southeast and southwest of England could experience 5C next Saturday.

However, the cold weather is unlikely to dominate the entire country for a month, with moderate temperatures predicted for early August in the south and north of England.

Talking about his predictions for August, Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge told Express.co.uk on Friday: “There will be another seven to 10 days of this unsettled weather as the jet stream comes in from the west giving us periods of rain and showers and moderate temperatures of 20C in the south and 17 to 18C in the north.

“August 7-14 looks warmer with sunnier conditions as the jet stream moves north allowing high pressure from the south to build up.

“Between August 10-14 normal temperatures of 20 – 25C in the south. The third week of August will see more warmth, 25C to perhaps 30C if high pressure takes hold.”

Downpours

On Monday, a band of “organised rain” will kick-start the week, affecting the northwest of England the most with 16mm of rain falling every hour.

London will be hit by 10 days of showers following yesterday’s drizzly conditions, all the way up to Monday, August 7.

The miserable conditions could continue into the second half of the month. The Met Office said in an updated forecast on 30 July: “During the second half of August, changeable weather is expected across the UK.
