British skydiver dies in 29-storey fall as parachute fails in Thailand

Nathy Odinson was filmed saying “3…2…1…See ya” as he leapt off flats in Pattaya – then he went into a tailspin as a pilot chute flailed in the night sky.

He first landed in a tree then dropped to the ground. Medics called to the scene in the coastal resort pronounced Nathy dead.

Traumatised security guard Kanet Chansong, 33, said: “I heard the sound of the tree and I thought it was a fallen branch.

“A woman screamed so I walked over and realised it was a person. They were dead.”

Nathy, 33, from Huntingdon, Cambs, is seen in footage asking the person filming him if his helmetcam has a red light flashing to show it is recording

When he realises it is not, Nathy removes his helmet and presses a button before checking his parachute briefly – he then leaps.

His friend, a Thai, was heard to utter “Oh f***” when he heard Nathy hit the ground.

Staff at the Lumpini Ville Naklua apartments checked back on their CCTV and saw that Nathy and a friend had waited until it was quiet before sneaking into the building.

They then trespassed on to the roof, with Nathy clambering over a small concrete wall to reach the edge. Security guard Kanet said that Nathy had jumped from the building several times previously, which posed a risk for pedestrians.

He added: “They were making video content for social media. They had done this before and they knew it was not allowed.”

Lt Kamolporn Nadee, deputy inspector of investigations at Bang Lamung district police station, said: “The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned and was not centered as expected.

“The friend who recorded the video of him jumping was questioned and the video was examined as evidence.”

He added: “Forensics officers are investigating the case. They are examining the parachute.”

Police notified British Embassy officials in Bangkok.

Nathy had completed sky dives and base jumps around the world. He also ran a sky photography firm and took clients sky diving.
