British dad Michael Holt found dead on boat days after horror shark attack

A Welsh dad has been found dead in his boat after a horror shark attack four weeks into a 3,000-mile charity challenge across the Atlantic. Michael Holt was tragically discovered dead in his cabin 700 miles into the adventure.

The 54-year-old had set off on January 27 on a journey expected to take 110 days and was regularly posting updates from his boat.

He had experienced some difficulties on his trip, including losing an oar and a shark attacking his boat’s rudder.

Michael, a type 1 diabetic, was nearly one-third of the way through his journey from Gran Canaria to Barbados. His devastated family revealed that they had lost contact with him two days after the scary incident.

Michael’s brother, David Holt, announced he had died in a post on Facebook after he was found by the crew of a fishing vessel.

He wrote: “We have been working tirelessly to get help to Michael over the past four days but have found it incredibly difficult to do so.

“Last night the fishing vessel Noruego accepted a tasking from Cape Verde Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and made directly for Michael’s coordinates.

“Very sadly, upon arrival, Michael was found dead inside his cabin.”

The statement added: “Of course this was not the ultimate conclusion we were looking for, but I am somewhat comforted knowing he died doing something he absolutely wanted to do with a passion and managed to row in excess of 700 miles in the process. An achievement in itself.”
