A British tourist has found himself “stuck battling with his credit card company” after a Greek restaurant allegedly charged more than £1,300 for “two drinks, an order of calamari and a bottle of water”.
DK Oyster Bar, on the Greek island of Mykonos, has been at the centre of a handful of tales of people reportedly receiving eye-watering bills for a few drinks and some food.
Despite being considered a luxury restaurant in the centre of the food hotspot of Platys Gialos, a little village on the southern top of Mykonos, DK Oyster Bar has a rating of just two stars out of five on Tripadvisor from more than 1,800 reviews.
Its Tripadvisor page is full of reviews claiming its waiters refuse to give their customers menus only to then charge extortionate prices when the bill arrives.
In the latest major complaint, one Brit identified as Robert G urged other tourists to avoid the restaurant, saying: “Beware this establishment.”
Writing on Trip Advisor, Robert G wrote: “Beware this establishment will overcharge for food and drink.
“They will lure you in with the offer of a free day bed and umbrella on the beach for a two drink minimum. When the bill comes the drinks cost £99 ($116 euros).
“We were also charged £127 ($148 euros) for an order of calamari (small print on the menu says they charge by the gram, who does that?).
“Total bill was £246 ($288) euros for two drinks, an order of calamari, and a bottle of water. What a scam!”
But it seems the restaurants alleged scamming antics were only just beginning.
Robert G added that despite the £246 price tag already being extortionate, he claimed the restaurant had multiplied the bill more than five-fold when they put it through.
The Brit added: “When the credit card charge hit my account it was for over £1,383 ($1,616 euros).
“Now I’m stuck battling with my credit card company to get this corrected. What a scam!”
Mykonos regularly attracts A-list celebrities from all over the world, including Nicole Scherzinger and Lottie Tomlinson, but DK Oyster Bar appears to have been scamming people for years.
Another user on Tripadvisor said they were “offered free sunbeds for a round of drinks in return”, only to find that they were charged more than £200 for “two beers and two cocktails”.
They added: “The most disgusting scam going. When talking to other local bars and restaurants, EVERYONE had heard of this place and were surprised we hadn’t!!
“We were warned by so many people after this experience.”
