The mother of murdered trans teen Brianna Ghey has broken her silence on Rishi Sunak’s comment yesterday in the Commons that has sparked fierce debate.
The prime minister mocked Keir Starmer over his position on trans people, accusing him of failing to stand by his commitments and U-turning on “defining a woman”.
“Although, in fairness, that was only 99 percent of a U-turn,” Sunak joked during PMQs as he referenced comments the Labour leader made when he said 99.9 percent of women don’t have male genitalia.
Brianna Ghey, 16, was murdered by two of her school peers, who were jailed on February 2.
The judge in the trial said Brianna being transgender was part of their motivation in killing her with her killers calling her “it” and “femboy” in messages.
Esther Ghey, who was in the chamber to attend a debate on mindfulness with her MP Charlotte Nichols, broke her silence with a comment on her Peace & Mind UK Facebook page. She said: “I don’t wish to comment on reports of wording or comments recently made. My focus is on creating a positive change and a lasting legacy for Brianna.
“Through Peace & Mind, we want to improve lives by empowering people, giving them the tools they need to build mental resilience, empathy, and self-compassion through mindfulness.
“In developing these skills, I hope that we can create a more understanding, peaceful, and stronger society for everyone.”
Brianna’s father Peter Spooner yesterday called on Mr Sunak to apologise for the “degrading” and “dehumanising” comments.
The prime minister has refused to apologise, saying his comments were “absolutely legitimate” as he was attempting to prove that Starmer “doesn’t have a plan” by pointing out his u-turns.
Sunak said today: “He’s someone who has just consistently changed his mind on a whole range of major things. I think that is an absolutely legitimate thing to point out and it demonstrates that he doesn’t have a plan for the country.”
