Boy cyclist dies after ‘serious collision’ in Birmingham – Major road to be shut for hours

Ambulance crews have confirmed a boy was killed following a “serious” crash in Birmingham on Thursday, June 8.

In a statement, West Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics attended the scene on Coventry Road, Yardley, and found the boy, “who was the cyclist” had suffered “life-threatening injuries”.

The service said that, despite their best efforts, the unnamed boy died and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics attended the scene at approximately 6.17pm on Thursday following a “traffic collision involving a car and a cyclist”, with two ambulances, two officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic arriving alongside the West Midlands CARE Team.

The statement issued to Birmingham Live continued: “Ambulance staff administered advanced life support to him but unfortunately, despite their best efforts, nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“A man who was a pedestrian, who was involved in a separate collision involving a pedestrian and a car nearby to the scene was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained minor injuries.

“He received treatment from ambulance staff before being conveyed to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment.

“No further patients required treatment.”

Police first attended the scene following the crash yesterday evening, and were confirmed to have shuttered the A45 in both directions from 7.50pm.

The road remained closed into the morning, until 1am on Friday, June 9, after officers warned it would have to shut for several hours.

Traffic reportedly returned to normal by rush hour this morning, while traces of police tape remained at the scene.
