Boris Becker appears to confirm first major coaching role since prison stint

Boris Becker appears to have landed a new coaching job less than a year after he was released from prison and seven years after he split with Novak Djokovic. The German tennis star has been spotted with Holger Rune in Monaco this week. And the world No 5 shared a new photo of his team after a practice session, including Becker in the snap.

The six-time Grand Slam champion has been sharing videos from the Monte Carlo Country Club over the last few days – the same club Rune has been practising at ahead of his upcoming tournaments. It sparked suggestions that Becker could be returning to a tennis coaching role.

And the pair fuelled rumours that Becker may have started working with Rune on Saturday as the 20-year-old included the German in his team photos. Becker can be seen arm-in-arm with Rune and his camp, and again standing at the baseline while Rune trains. “Great practice week in Monaco,” the Dane wrote.

Becker famously coached Djokovic from late 2013 to late 2016 and was part of the world No 1’s camp when he completed the career Grand Slam by winning the French Open for the first time. The 55-year-old has not worked with another tennis player since he was released from prison last December.

In March 2022, the former world No 1 was found guilty of four charges under the Insolvency Act relating to his bankruptcy and was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. He was released after eight months and sent back to Germany as part of a scheme that sees foreign nationals deported in an effort to relieve pressures on British prisons.

Becker has since returned to his commentary job on Eurosport but was unable to continue working for the BBC as part of their Wimbledon coverage as he is currently banned from returning to the UK following his prison stint. And it looks as though he has now taken on a new job in Rune’s team.

The world No 5 recently parted ways with Patrick Mouratoglou and reunited with his old coach Lars Christensen. Rune has been struggling for form since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final, going 1-5 in tour-level matches.
