Body spotted in canal prompting huge police response in Birmingham

A body of a man has been recovered from a popular canal in Birmingham. The emergency services were called to the Perry Barr Top Lock just off the A34 Walsall Road, at the junction of Fairview Avenue, around 7.45am today.

The entrance to the canal was blocked off by several police vehicles and a cordon around the locks while the recovery process took place. Police confirmed the body was that of a male, Birmingham Live reports.

They are not treating the incident as suspicious and have referred the case to the coroner. The cordon was removed by police around 11am and the canalside access reopened.

A spokeswoman from West Midlands Police said: “We were called after a man’s body was found in the canal off Fairview Avenue, Great Barr, at 7.45am (13 May). Sadly, nothing could be done to save the man. His family have been informed.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The picturesque spot is popular with locals and is close to the Alexander Stadium complex which hosted the Commonwealth Games last year.
