Body found as divers search river for woman, 24, who went missing on way to work

A body has been found in the search for a young woman who disappeared five days ago.

It comes after specialist divers were today (Wednesday, May 24) called in to join an urgent police search.  Shannon Canning, 24, disappeared in the early hours of Friday after leaving her home in Lancaster, Lancashire.  She did not arrive for work at a cocktail bar in the city centre.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the force reportedly believes the body to be Shannon’s. Today,  divers carried out underwater searches of the River Lune in the city centre.

The force confirmed it was focusing the search around the Ridge Estate and city centre areas, but cops are also searching areas of land and specific addresses.  Detectives have also quizzed members of the public, studied CCTV footage and conducted digital inquiries.

Police had said the disappearance was out of character and they were becoming increasingly concerned for her welfare.  A force spokesman said: “This is a missing from home enquiry currently but all lines of enquiry are being carried out.”
