Block of flats bursts into flames with smoke and fire seen pouring out of window in London

A major fire has broken out at a housing block in central London as flames have been seen leaping out of a flat’s window. London Fire Brigade said shortly before 4.30pm this afternoon that it had sent six fire engines and around 40 firefighters to the blaze on Bartholomew Close in Barbican.

Witness Marcus Walker shared a video from the scene, which appeared to show one residence completely engulfed in bright orange flames.

He wrote: “A fire has broken out right next to St Bart’s. Please pray for the people of Bartholomew Close and for the emergency services who have got here in record time.”

LFB said half of a four-roomed flat on the third floor is currently alight, reports the Mirror.

One man had left the building before the Brigade arrived and he is being treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers have taken more than 35 calls to the blaze.

Fire crews from Soho, East Greenwich, Lambeth and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

People are being told to avoid the area while the fire service deal with the incident.
