Biden pays tribute to 'soccer legend' Pele as Brazilian footballing star dies aged 82

President Biden has paid tribute to “soccer legend” Pele, who has died at the age of 82. The POTUS hailed the sports star’s “humble beginnings” before he rose to become Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000, scoring a record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during his 21-year career.

The legendary forward scored 77 goals in 92 matches playing for his country and lifted the World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Pele had been suffering from health problems in recent years, having had surgery in 2021 to remove a tumour from his colon.

He was readmitted to hospital a month ago where his family had been watching over him.

President Biden posted his tribute on Twitter alongside a photo of him meeting the footballer.

He wrote: “For a sport that brings the world together like no other, Pelé’s rise from humble beginnings to soccer legend is a story of what is possible.

“Today, Jill and I’s thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him.”

His daughter Kely Nascimiento kept fans updated with regular posts on social media from the hospital.

On Thursday she shared a picture of what appeared to be Pele’s family’s hands on his body in hospital and wrote: “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

His former club Santos shared details of his funeral, with his body being moved on Monday morning from the hospital to the club’s Estadio Urbano Caldeira.

The coffin will be placed in the centre of the pitch for the public to pay respects.

On Tuesday, there will be a procession through the streets of Santos in Sao Paulo to a private family burial.
