Before he was a 'killer': Robert Card yearbook photos give insight into Maine suspect

New yearbook photos have emerged of suspected Maine mass shooter Robert Card, and they depict a very different man than the one accused of killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 60.

The graduate of Mount Ararat High School was listed as someone who was an avid hunter, who also enjoyed swimming, playing baseball games and ‘pond hockey.’

What’s more, classmates told the Daily Mail that Card — who graduated high school in 2001 — was someone who was an extroverted socialite, who loved playing paintball with his classmates, and who was known for making the “best out of a bad situation.”

Despite this seemingly human side of Robert Card, the family of the suspected Maine mass shooter said that their family member was someone who wasn’t exactly stitched together properly, and they were concerned about his mental health.

“He truly believed he was hearing people say things. This all just happened within the last few months,” Katie O’Neill, who is married to Card’s brother, told the Daily Beast.

“I have known Rob my whole life. He is quiet but the most loving, hardworking, and kind person that I know. But in the past year, he had an acute episode of mental health.”

She continued: “He would get mad and claim that we didn’t believe him. We tried to listen to him and tell him that nobody was talking about him. Yesterday, as the story was unfolding, we prayed that Rob had nothing to do with this. But when we heard the two places where the shooting happened, my husband rushed home.”

Card has also been urged to turn himself in, according to his sister-in-law.

The attacks in Lewiston, which is located outside of Portland, happened at Schemengees bar and bowling alley Sparetime Recreation, where a local children’s party was taking place.

Lewiston City Councilor Robert McCarthy, whose home is located half a mile from the location of one of the shootings, explained it was “a real scary event.”

Lewiston Police stated: “Law Enforcement is attempting to locate Robert Card 4/4/1983, as a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation this evening. CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts.”

No arrests have been made so far, but police have named 40-year-old Robert Card as a “person of interest”, saying he should be “considered armed and dangerous.”
