If you’re in the market for a new English city to visit as winter turns to spring why not give tiny Ely in Cambridgeshire a go? It’s the country’s second smallest city, so it’s well-suited to pedestrians perusing everything it has to offer. And there is plenty. Including a truly stunning cathedral.
As well as a breathtaking cathedral, the surrounding buildings are also very easy on the eye. Ely is blessed with a diverse and contemporary food scene, so prepare to tuck in as you wander the quaint streets.
Ely Riverside is the perfect place for a spring walk with your partner, the kids or even for on your own. Add to that the Eel trail, and Ely’s credentials as a hikers’ paradise are clear.
The main attraction in Ely though is the 14th-century cathedral and Tripadvisor reviewers are almost unanimous in singing its praises.
One reviewer, Candace from Essex, wrote: “Came with a large family group with ages varying from 6 – 70+. Everyone enjoyed it! The mirrors to view the ceiling were popular, as was the nativity trail.
“The highlight for me was the tour we took around the tower. (Extra charge but well worth it.)
“We had a well-informed, enthusiastic tour guide (possibly called John!) who took us around the tower and onto the roof. Spectacular views from both inside and outside the cathedral. Good value for money.”
Another added: “Had an incredible experience at Ely Cathedral! I went on a ground-floor tour and would highly recommend it – our guide Michael knew a lot about the cathedral and was able to share so many things that you wouldn’t find out if you were just looking around the cathedral on your own.
“A must-do for anyone interested in architecture and history, regardless of your religion. The octagon is unique and beautiful, and has a fascinating story behind it. The cathedral is currently home to a table built from a rare local wood – but the exhibit is only temporary so be sure to check it out before it’s gone.
“I spent a couple of hours here but you could easily take longer, especially if you go on multiple tours (there are options to climb up various towers). If you book online – be sure to visit the ticket office and ask for an annual pass (at no extra cost upon presentation of your electronic ticket).”
