BBC forced to apologise after major blunder over Sadiq Khan's election broadcast

The BBC has apologised after accidentally replacing Sadiq Khan’s London mayoral party political broadcast with one for Tory rival Susan Hall.

The Labour politician’s three-minute campaign video was due to be shown on BBC One in London just before 7pm yesterday.

But viewers were instead played a film promoting Conservative candidate Ms Hall despite Mr Khan’s broadcast being announced.

Mr Khan’s election broadcast is now due to be shown this evening following the blunder.

A BBC spokesman told the Evening Standard: “Following a scheduling mix-up, Labour’s party political broadcast will be aired on BBC One London this evening.”

It is understood both Mr Khan and Ms Hall’s teams have received written apologies from the corporation.

The blunder comes ahead of the London mayoral election on May 2.

Labour incumbent Mr Khan is seeking an unprecedented third term in City Hall.

A new poll of 1,019 Londoners by Survation put Mr Khan on 44%, compared to Ms Hall on 26%.

Lib Dem candidate Rob Blackie and the Green Party’s Zoe Garbett are both on 7%, while Reform UK’s Howard Cox is on 5%.

The survey for ITV News found Mr Khan’s net approval rating was 4%, while Ms Hall was on 5%.
